About this product

Product Information

Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin tales are widely acknowledged to be the greatest series of historical novels ever written. Patrick O'Brian is regarded by many as the greatest historical novelist now writing. Post Captain, the second novel in his remarkable Aubrey/Maturin series, led Mary Renault to write: 'Master and Commander raised dangerously high expectations; Post Captain triumphantly surpasses them.' This tale begins with Jack Aubrey arriving home from his exploits in the Mediterranean to find England at peace following the Treaty of Amiens. He and his friend Stephen Maturin, surgeon and secret agent, begin to live the lives of country gentlemen, hunting, entertaining and enjoying more amorous adventures. Their comfortable existence, however, is cut short when Jack is overnight reduced to a pauper with enough debts to keep him in prison for life. He flees to the continent to seek refuge: instead he finds himself a hunted fugitive as Napoleon has ordered the internment of all Englishmen in France. Aubrey's adventures in escaping from France and the debtors' prison will grip the reader as fast as his unequalled actions at sea.

  • GRIPPING ABSORBING READING.

Started to read. Great storyline and lots of action. Have read all Hornblower books and this book is equally as gripping. So well written it transports the imagination so you feel there in the story. Great books by this author if this naval period is your thing.

  • Great fun, but outrageously derivative.

Was delighted to belatedly discover Patrick O'Brian's excellent tales of seafaring 'daring do', during the course of the Napoleonic wars, but astonished to realise how derivative it was, mirroring almost exactly that of the Hornblower series (written 20yrs earlier!), whereby protagonists of both series rise from lowly position to that of Admiral, and both have a 'sidekick', Stephen Maturin and William Bush, who look with undying respect on their much wiser and stoic alpha role models, Jack Aubry and Horatio Hornblower respectively. Both series are great fun, but surprised that legal action on the grounds of unashamed plagiarism didn't ensue.

  • Baham books never disappoint. Honestly,...

Baham books never disappoint. Honestly, O Brian leaves CS Forester in the shade for Napoleonic naval thrillers. Hornblower is self obsessed, maudlin and feels like a mere 2D paper doll. Aubrey is alive, you are there within his world.
