About this product

Product Information

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. Born a poor black tobacco farmer, her cancer cells - taken without her knowledge - became a multimillion-dollar industry and one of the most important tools in medicine. Yet Henrietta's family did not learn of her 'immortality' until more than twenty years after her death, with devastating consequences . . . Rebecca Skloot's fascinating account is the story of the life, and afterlife, of one woman who changed the medical world forever. Balancing the beauty and drama of scientific discovery with dark questions about who owns the stuff our bodies are made of, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is an extraordinary journey in search of the soul and story of a real woman, whose cells live on today in all four corners of the world.

HOW CAN A LIFE BE IMMORTAL? READ THE BOOK, YOU WILL THEN BE SHOCKED!!

I CAUGHT THE TALE END OF THE FILM ON T.V. RECENTLY, I KNEW I JUST HAD TO READ THE BOOK., FILM WAS COMPELLING, THE BOOK IS EVEN BETTER BECAUSE THE AUTHOR BUILT SUCH A GGOD RELATIONSHIP WIYH THE WHOLE FAMILY, NOT JUST HENRIETTA.I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THIS BOOK!!!

  • Most critical review

A good Black history science narrative

Recommended this book for a Bookgroup read. Good balance between the scientific narrative and the family history, but Henrietta Lacks herself does remain a victim of experimental exploitation, despite the advances made from her cells. I'm pleased to be reading the book and I would most certainly recommend its future listing as essential reading in schools and colleges. Also very reasonably priced and easy to get hold of...you really need to stick with it to get the most out of it...as it deserves re-reading to absorb the science facts

  • Well researched and a truly heartfelt book - a gift that the story has been told !

Everyone should read this book if they have any interest in the world of medicine or black civil rights - absoulutely brilliant book and a story that we may otherwise not have heard. Well researched and a fascinating read - sad at times but worthy of your time.

  • Not very good at all!

The description says minimal damage to front cover, minor scuffs. It's been folded many times and is actually in quite a state!! My 5 year olds books are in a better condition!

  • Great true life story which is very well written.

Great medical and social history. Very well written as are often books from the pen of a journalist. A sort of thriller in reverse.
