I purchased this phone as after using android phones for the last year, I became a little tired of constantly running taskiller just to keep the speed up. I wanted something that didn't hang all the time but wasn't an iPhone as I'm in construction and don't want something expensive that's likely to get a battering. So I took a gamble on the Pre. The technology is a good 3 or 4 years old and it shows, signal can be weak at times, apps development has fallen to the wayside as there's not much support and it feels cheaply made, however the screen is crystal clear, opening, switching and closing apps is something IPhone users are impressed with and I find it a breeze to use. E mail and calendars sync with ease and this is the first phone ive had in years that connects and streams music to both my car kits Bluetooth. Battery life is average after tweaking the phone and the browser is ok, but not up to iPhone/android standards. Unfortunately it lacks navigation which I really miss, google nav is the best navigation setup at the moment, but I've learned to live without it. Overall I'm very happy with the phone, although build quality is suspect I much prefer this phone over a Blackberry and if you consider the cost it's an absolute bargain.Read full review
I bought the phone for my daughter in first year university to replace a non-smart phone which had become faulty. The phone arrived on time and in a satisfactory condition. The phone's pebble-like shape makes for compactness and the action of the slide out keyboard is positive. However, the keys are necessarily closely spaced and whereas my daughter seems to be able to text at high speed, I would have difficulty with the small keys. A touchscreen keypad would make all the difference to me. The battery charge seems to be about average with smartphones and when in regular use, requires a daily charge. The camera works well. All in all, I think the phone represents good value for money especially when contrasted against some of the much higher-priced alternative offerings. The lack of a touchscren keyboard would be the only thing to prevent me buying a current model.Read full review
The Palm Pe is a very nice piece of kit, with several major drawbacks. The interface is extremely easy to use and extremely attractive. Multitasking is simple and switching among open applications is a no-brainer. The entire phone is sleek, compact, with a QWERTY keyboard that slides down from the bottom of the phone. The keys are small and textured, suitable for people with small fingers or thumbs. Navigation is fairly straightforward on the generous touchscreen, which is the heart of the phone. Mine came with a touchstone charger. This is a nice innovation: with a special battery cover, you simply place the phone on the touchstone device, which is plugged into the mains, and it begins charging. It is a very attractive piece of kit. However it has some shortfalls. First, I was disappointed to discover that even though it wears the palm name, the WebOS does not run any of the palm applications. Second, there is no easy way of syncing the phone with a computer. The webOS insists on doing everything in the Cloud. If you want to sync your contacts from you computer you have to set up a web email account, upload all your contacts from your computer to the web account, then download the data to your palm pre. Thereafter eveything is done via the cloud. Third party software has been developed that will enable contact syncronisation with a computer, but it is a rather awkward three step process. The Palm Pre does have bluetooth, but it only communicates with audio devices, so you can connect to a bluetooth headset, or to your car's bluetooth audio system, but you cannot transfer data from your palm pre to or from any other computing device. Bottom line: If you don't have a generous data plan, don't get this. Mine was listed as SIM Unlocked and I believe it was. However when I placed any card in it besides one from the original network it was with, the phone came up with a baffling set of blanks to fill in regarding network and internet settings, which I had no idea how to fill in. The final nail in my palm pre's coffin was when I put it in my pocket the first evening I took it out of the house and cracked the screen. No local shops would replace the screen. Searching the web, I found I had joined the ranks of a great many others with the same problem. I did find a replacement screen on Ebay and some excellent video instruction on Utube which I followed. Unfortunately I broke a tiny tab on the phone's mainboard and that finished it for me. It is now sitting in a box on top of the book case along with various bits of kit I don't use very often. Although it is a very nice bit of kit, I cannot recommend it because of the broken screen problems, its lack of software compatibility with legacy palm OS applications, and its dependancy on the web.Read full review
My Palm Pre 2 is 16GB, not 8GB. Its screen is brighter than some other leading brands of smartphone and having rubberized casing too, makes for a firmer grip when operating it being much less likely to slip from your hand as those with shiny casing easily do. I very much like the 'windows' method of operation once having gotten used to it which takes a bit of getting familiar with as it's unique. All-in-all, I am pleased I chose this phone and also managed successfully to instal suitable network connection settings for a better-deal alternative mobile service provider which did not happen to support the HP Palm.
this is a very useful bit of comms kit. I bought it initially because the product description included SatNav, but this turned out to untrue. It just came with GoogleMaps, which has since been removed. It automatically downloads my pop3 email service, which is a marvellous feature for me. Iget the inputted contents of my website response forms immediately, wherever i am. ThephoneOS is brilliant. MS could learn from it. I would not be without this phone now. For complete capability it is top. Also, the build is excellent and compact. The battery life is rubbish though. Thanks HP.
