Hydlide is a piece of video game history but still a typical example of a prototype, unfinished development of the 80s. Back then, the programmers had problems to implement a role-playing concept into a video or computer game. The reason was the very limited memory storage. Just like Dragon Warrior NES and similiar representatives of that time, Hydlide misses the important and essential party group system, to make an interactive storyline and interactions between the PLAYER CHARACTERS possible. ( Role-playing games are constititively played in a group , that's why the name and the three letters RPG) If on a theater stage, LARP, Pen&Paper at the table or in a video and computer game, what clarifies the history and evolution of RPGs, too. Hydlide combines the typical adventure factor with the primitive hack&slash gameplay of that time, so it's far away from the concept and definition of an RPG. Real examples of RPG simulation of that time were Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar, Wizardry, AD&D Pool of Radiance or from the east, Herakles no Eikou II famicom, Final Fantasy or the later Dragon Warrior titles. WHAT TO SAY ABOUT THIS GAME IT IS A LOT OF FUN GRAPHICS ARE PRETTY GOOD ESPECIALLY FOR A NES GAME IT KEEPS YOU THINKING AND ON YOUR TOES CAN BE VERY ADDICTIVE I KNOW THIS GAME GETS SOME BAD PRESS BUT TRUTHFULLY I DONT SEE WHY ITS BETTER THAN MOST NES GAMES AND IF I REMEMBER CORRECLTY WAS NEVER DESIGNED FOR THE NES BUT THE ATARI OR COMMODORE BEFORE IT SO EXPECTATIONS CANT BE THAT HIGH HAVING SAID THAT I WOULD PUT THIS IN THE TOP BRACKET OF NES GAMES GOOD GRAPHICS MUSIC AND GAMEPLAY IF YOU LIKE RPG'S THEN YOU WILL WANT THIS AND YOU CAN GET A GOOD AFFORDABLE PRICE FOR NOW MY ADVICE WOULD BE SNAP IT UP AND GIVE IT A GO
Hydlide could have been a great game if not for gameplay bugs, and could have been more well accepted if they would have realized that they needed to travel further into it. Get deeper, more involved in the game that could have shined. When people say Hydlide today, the reply usually is quite negative, but if they could cherish the game for what it was all about, they would say it was purely miraculous.

I played this game for about 20 minutes and still don't understand what to do. Even did a google search to figure it out. It looks fun, but I cannot figure it out.
