About this product
Product Information
In 1948, with the Nationalisation of the railways, almost 120 years of railway history came to a close with the disappearance of the Great Western Railway. The GWR was the only one of the 'Big Four' companies effectively to emerge at the Grouping in 1923 largely unchanged and, over its long history, it had established an ethos and following amongst enthusiasts that was second to none. Despite the disappearance of the GWR in 1948, the newly created Western Region of British Railways still managed, however, to maintain uniqueness. This was possibly as a result of the fact that, until regional boundaries were rationalised, the WR was still the GWR to all intents and also as a result of the decision, at Modernisation, that the WR would see extensive use of hydraulic transmission, rather than the more usual electric, in its fleet of diesel locomotives. For railway modellers, the GWR and BR (WR) have always been popular prototypes for modelling; the Region's numerous branch lines offering a range of superb prototypes and the romance of the branch lines of the West Country is evident in the number of models to have been constructed based on them and the number of books published over the years. In the latest of the hugely successful Modelling in Colour for the Modeller and Historian series, noted expert on the Western, Laurence Waters, has sourced some 160 colour illustrations to portray the Western region during the two decades after the Nationalisation of the railways. Drawn from the collections of many notable photographers of the period and from the archives of the Great Western Society at Didcot, this book features the great variety of the WR's facilities and services during those years. Alongside the photographs, the author's detailed captions add considerably to the information available, making this book a useful work of reference to any railway modeller contemplating the construction of a layout based on WR practice during those years. With the popularity of the WR, amongst railway enthusiasts in general and railway modellers in particular, undiminished, this book will be eagerly anticipated. This will be a welcome addition to an already popular series.
