This is a great sea adventure film which comes historical accuracy in terms of the conditions on-board ship and the age of the crew members with an exciting story line. I very much enjoyed the film and the characters.

Besides and interesting story, well acted, the film describes life and war at sea in the early 19th century. Therefore it is historically accurate. Cannonballs caused huge damage to ships and sailors and the ship's surgeon job was not to be envied. Visit the Warrior and the Victory at Portsmouth then watch this film. Brings it all to life.

Having seen the film I decided that I wanted to watch it again in my own time and the comfort of home. If you are into the period of the old sailing ships and naval battles then this is the film to get and it has a super sound track to go with it. One of the better films on the market.
This is a brilliant film, great story and excellent actors. The visual and sound effects are fabulous, particularly if you have a large screen and surround sound. I can recommend this to anyone.
Even if you have never read the novels of Patrick O'Brien, or loved the 20 novel friendship of Captain Jack Aubrey and Surgeon/Philosopher Stephen Maturin, this film is a wonderful history lesson. Short of visiting HMS Victory in Portsmouth, this film is by far the closest you will come to seeing how life was really lived on a British naval vessel during the Napoleonic wars, never before has the fine detail of life on a wooden-walled warship been so brilliantly captured. I can say no more. Just watch the film and see what all the members of the crew go through and how they live afloat. Buy the 2-disc version, the extras are really interesting, and it says a lot that so many well-established actors were prepared to get down and dirty, and work really hard, to make this film happen.
