This witty collection of essays recounts a lifelong love affair with books and language. For Fadiman, as for many passionate readers, the books she loves have become chapters in her own life story.     Respite from these troubled times

    This little book of beautifully written essays from an author with a fascination for books is a delight for anyone who loves to read. Fadiman has an investigative mind that makes ordinary situations fascinating. I was sorry to reach the last essay and will certainly look for more from this gifted writer.
