The hole in the cover was small enough to hold the button on the shift lever.
After turning off the engine, the car recognized that the button was still pressed and did not turn off, much to my dismay.
I used scissors to cut it open downward and the problem was solved without interfering with the button.
The fact that I could easily and cleanly cut it open with just scissors was good.
