About this product

Product Information

In a dusty post-war summer in rural Warwickshire, a doctor is called to a patient at lonely Hundreds Hall. Home to the Ayres family for over two centuries, the Georgian house, once grand and handsome, is now in decline, its masonry crumbling, its gardens choked with weeds, its owners - mother, son and daughter - struggling to keep pace. But are the Ayreses haunted by something more sinister than a dying way of life? Little does Dr Faraday know how closely, and how terrifyingly, their story is about to become entwined with his.

Not a horror but still a worthwhile read

When this was put forward as a suggestion at our book club, I was a bit hesitant. I struggle with horror books as I just don't find them scary. I need the music, the creepy dark rooms and the atmosphere from films; I don't think you really get that from a book. However one of the women at the group said she was the same but there was something creepy about this book. I would agree with that, the scary scenes certainly do put you a little on edge. Waters is brilliant at making such vivid descriptions and whilst I wasn't scared as such, there was a definite hint of goosebumps. However the scary scenes were very few and far between; a handful of pages if that. The book therefore became something else for me; it was all about the characters and their interactions with each other. It was a long ...

  • Deserving of all the praise it receives

Brilliant storytelling, she is such a great writer she is able to evoke a time gone by so well that you completely loose yourself in that era. Genuinely compelling and at times very creepy, i was spooked several times !!

  • Not quite as expected

Very well written book but certainly not as scary as reviews stated. 1 chapter left to read so perhaps it will live up to the hype at last!

  • A modern classic

For fans of old fashioned ghost stories, I could not recommend this enough. I would liken it to Henry James' 'The Turn Of The Screw' in the way that you can approach it from different angles and interpret the action in several ways. I will not elaborate story wise so as not to spoil the read but, be warned, it is a tale that refuses to leave your conciousness even when the last page is turned.

  • classic haunting

in the age of digital books, it is refreshing to actually turn pages
