About this product

Product Information

In a win-or-die-trying romp through America's happy days, Mafia II players vie for underworld ascendancy, in the role of a young thug who's willing to drive and shoot his way in and out of whatever trouble it takes to get the job done. The original Mafia won a gangland of fans by combining the open-ended driving adventure and on-foot urban action of Grand Theft Auto III with a more tightly scripted story, set in a romanticized 1930s inspired by films and pulp fiction. Coming a console-generation later, Mafia II presents a grittier, less linear, more personal adventure, but with the same goal of enveloping the player in a cinematic experience of action, violence, and storytelling.

Mafia II is set in Empire Bay, a fictional metropolis inspired primarily by New York and San Francisco, and influenced by other major American cities during the 1940s and early 1950s. Most of the game plays out in a ten square-mile area, created from hundreds of photographs and illustrations of the era, in interactive detail worthy of Illusion Softwork's (now 2K Czech's) original setting of Lost Heaven -- but in higher definition and greater intricacy. Players are free to walk, drive, and move all about the area with no artificial restriction, but the choices made there have realistic consequences. Laws, both capital and minor, are expected by in-game authorities to be obeyed. In many common situations, players can choose between "normal" and "violent" interactions with objects or people.

Instead of unfortunate circumstances leading the main character to a life of crime, as in the original game, Mafia II's Vito Scaletta is an outlaw hero at heart, whose ambition outweighs his moral reservations right from the start. When he was busted in a small-time robbery that went wrong, he took an opportunity to join the military instead of serving time in jail. The game begins as Vito returns from his tour of duty in World War II, ready to get back to work on his career. There are at least three competing crime families running the Empire Bay underworld. With patience, some luck, and a little dirty work, one day Vito hopes to be the man in charge of the one that puts the other two out of business.

    Game has bug!

Started playing the game. The graphics are good. There is more Driving the cars than I would like. BUT the main problem is the game is hung up about 1/2 way thru. I can't get any help from Origin or Steam on how to fix it. I tried several times and uninstalled and reloaded with no success.

  • Excellent return of a franchise with great promise!

Mafia II is an excellent return of a franchise with great promise. Vito and his associates are memorable characters in a city bursting with subtle visual details and violent undertones. The story pulls no punches, neither glorifying nor demeaning the difficult lives its protagonists lead--just presenting them with brutal honesty and letting you reach your own conclusions. After the 15-or-so hours it might take you to gun through Vito's story, it's hard not to come away with the sense that there should have been more to do in this beautiful city. Yet while you might be disappointed with what Mafia II doesn't do, it's hard to be disappointed by what this excellent game does do: deliver fun shoot-outs and pockets of shocking brutality in a world you're delighted to be a part of. The ...

  • Awesome!!!

I've been waiting for a good sale on this game on steam! $15 is a killer price. To the hater: Steam isn't a "one time download" but yes the game will be tied to your account only forever. If you have 5 PCs you can install the game on all 5 but only play on the system that you're logged in on. If you run out of space delete the game and download it again later without having to enter the code again.

  • why foreigners suck.

i give mafia 2 6 out of 10 stars. i will put it this way. mafia 2 does not come even close to being worth the full retail price of 50+ dollars. when you consider all the stupid little add ons, that you have to pay for. we the consumer are being robbed. if anyone is looking to buy this game, i highly recomend looking on ebay. i paid 24 dollars for mine on pc. i hope you can find one just as cheap on what ever console you own. i feel sorrow for anyone that pays 50 to 70 dollars for such an average, and way over rated game.

  • Could be better

Basically, the story is very good. Graphics are good. Aiming system and control is good. Cars are great! The AI for cops is below average. Lack of Multiplayer is disappointing. Overall, it was worth the $11 bucks I spent on it. It was generally fun to play.
