About this product

Product Information

Hard-drinking private eye Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) sleuths the backyard of San Francisco in search of an elusive black bird statuette while evading the setups of three disparate miscreants: the duplicitous Brigid, the perfumed Mr. Cairo, and the scheming Fat Man. John Huston's brilliant directorial debut is aided by first-rate performances, excellent camera work, as well as the director's acute attention to detail while shooting the film. Based on the crime novel by Dashiell Hammett. Academy Award Nominations: 3, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Sydney Greenstreet), and Best Screenplay. Previous versions of the story were filmed in 1931 (a.k.a. DANGEROUS FEMALE) and in 1936 (as SATAN MET A LADY, starring Bette Davis), and poorly redone in 1975 (THE BLACK BIRD).

  • Classic Film Noir!

Classic Noir! If you love the classic Film Noir genre this one is a must and if you don't really know then watch it anyway. Fast paced with great actors and characters. Bogart at his best with strong performances from the entire cast. It's a fun ride!

  • Classic Bogart

A classic film; Bogart at his best. The producers originally wanted George Raft, but he turned it down, for which film fans are grateful. Probably no one but Bogart could have done justice to Sam Spade. The great cast includes Sidney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, Elisha Cook Jr., Mary Astor, Ward Bond, and Barton MacLane. The Maltese Falcon set the tone for many other Hollywood film noir classics.

  • Oldie but goodie!

I've sen this before and i also was fortunate enough to watch this on the big screen a couple years back through Fathom Events and Turner Classiv Movies for I believe it was the 75th anniversary of the movie (i can't exactly recall), however I hadn't secured a copy of my own. I compared prices between here and Amazon and here on EBay and found a better used price here, so of course I made my purchase here and i can proudly say it is now part of my personal collection. You can't go wrong with Humphrey Bogart, especially in The Maltese Falcon. What a classic! I wish i could say my collection is complete, but alas, there is always something to add! I'm sure I'll be back again soon to purchase something else! What a find and at a great price (previously owned) and in great condition!

  • Movies ain't what they used to be!

Maltese Falcon is a Detective movie of which there is little comparison! ALL the players are so believable in their parts that the fact the best Actors of our time played them is secondary. Humphrey Bogart,Mary Astor,Gladys George,Peter Lorre,....any of those names ring a bell? Humphrey probably does, but the "secondary" character actors are the ones who pull this movie off! This movie is engaging not really because of the plot, but this ensemble of actors are top notch and it is a movie that you can watch over and over again without boredom and you will always find something you missed in your previous viewing. This is a movie to have in your Movie Library and should show to young people ,so they will have a touchstone for perfection in movies, something they will not be able to see in today's poor excuses for Film! Buy it.

  • Vanguard of Film Noire

With Bogart's gumshoe slang, the cops cracking foxy, dames in distress, and shady odd characters with dreams of avarice, this early detective story remains a classic. Any film buff has to have this in the collection, and anybody can enjoy the drama and intrigue.

  • Absolutely one of the best of the classics.

Considered by many movie buffs as the best detective movie ever made. John Huston had written several screen plays, this was the first one he directed. First movie with Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre. I never understood why they made such a fuss about Mary Astor being so glamorous - I thought she was rather ordinary looking.

  • One of the great films

Classic film and arguably the first film "noir". It's Bogart at his very best and the definitive point where his screen legend began to materialize. Incredible cast. A must see for any true film fan.
