Synopsis
It has been almost 25 years since Andrew Christensen and the late Neil Jacobson wrote the first edition of this treatment manual for Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT). Now, new research and extensive dissemination of IBCT call for an update to this groundbreaking text. Revised by Christensen and Brian D. Doss, this new-and-improved manual maintains the fundamental principles of IBCT while elaborating on these ideas and including a wealth of examples that will make it easier for the clinician to understand not just the principles, but the diverse ways in which they can be applied. After providing an overview of couple distress and therapy, the book walks the clinician through the complete arc of a couples journey through IBCT, from initial assessment, to the feedback session, and on to treatment. Strategies for promoting both acceptance and deliberate change are discussed, with case studies that illustrate effective IBCT methods. Recent research in IBCT is summarized at points throughout the book in order to document how IBCT leads to beneficial outcomes for couples. This research also shows the specific benefits to important subgroups such as minority couples, affair couples, and couples with low levels of intimate partner violence. These special considerations and new directions in IBCT-including recommendations on how to integrate the online self-help version of IBCT (the OurRelationship program) into an abbreviated version of IBCT-make up the final chapters of this manual. This long-anticipated update improves a manual that has helped clinicians for over two decades, addressing such crucial issues as couple diversity and recent advances in IBCT. With all of IBCT's core principles and greater accessibility to clinicians and couples alike, this manual is a must-have resource for any couple therapist. Book jacket., The definitive therapist manual for Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT)--one of the most empirically supported approaches to couple therapy., Andrew Christensen, codeveloper (along with the late Neil Jacobson) of Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy, and Brian Doss provide an essential manual for their evidence-based practice. The authors offer guidance on formulation, assessment, and feedback of couples' distress from an IBCT perspective. They also detail techniques to achieve acceptance and deliberate change. In this updated edition of the work, readers learn about innovations to the IBCT approach in the 20+ years since the publication of the original edition--including refinements of core therapeutic techniques. Additionally, this edition provides new guidance on working with diverse couples, complex clinical issues, and integrating technology into a course of treatment.
