First off - Harley was born in Canada, eh! Secondly, if you learn just from his tips on measuring dimensions alone, (Chapter 2 - The Art of Measurement) you would have got your money's worth. I have a hardcover version of the book (published by International Artist) and have given it a plastic cover in order to protect it from my constant reading of it. Like the lady says, you can open any page and pick up a valuable tip. I have been painting for years and Harley was still able to teach this old dog some tricks. Personally, I like the fact that his edges are brushy with few straight lines (Chapter 6 - All about Edges), and he takes chances with color (he says "forget about color for a moment, first understand the POWER of tone")! Check out his 'portrait' of his Harley hog, it's filled with atmospheric perspective even over the relatively short length of the motorcycle. Apply THAT lesson to your paintings and see how they improve. Another thing I like is his way of treating backgrounds (which Richard Schmid does too). Harley Brown is the man.Read full review

Our pastel society had a book review program last month. I came right home and ordered this book. Our president, reviewed it and recommended it highly. She said it had been instrumental in developing her skills. She's a fantastic artist. I've read most of it now, and it is very instructive. Unlike many boring how-to paint books, this one is written with humor and is an easy read. In fact, you can open to almost any page and read for just a few minutes and gain nuggets that will improve your painting skills. She was right, Harley Brown's book is an excellent book for anyone wanting to learn or improve their painting skills. I particularly like his lists such as "15 things you should definately leave out of your paintings". The book is full of common sense pointers and bits of wisdom delivered in a very readable and enjoyable way. His paintings and examples, scattered throughout the book, are inspirational. I highly recommend this book.Read full review
