The movie is less about a killer than about the convergence of feeling between a criminal and a cop. As usual, the killer's character, seeking to help a singer he incidentally injured, enables the viewer to empathise with him; the cop is (again as usual) forced into maverick behaviour by his less insightful supereriors and colleagues. And their adversaries' guns never seem to hit anything (at least, not mortally)whereas the guns of the cop and killer frequently seem to have inexhaustible ammo. So, a stereotypical crime caper movie? Not really, because this is made in Hong Kong not Hollywood and is so much better for it. Crucially, Hollywood would never have allowed the ending to be as it is in this film, and it would have toned down the homoerotic interplay between the killer and cop. The production values might have been higher in a Hollywood production, and the sexual attraction between the killer and the singer would have been more stated, but then we would definitely have a stereotyped movie. As it is, this movie comes over as original and fresh even after some 18 years. Well worth acquiring.Read full review
just love these titles by chow yun, seen them loads think they are just quality get a copy now you will love the basic raw film......
This is John Woo's finest moment (along with the tea house massacre in Hard Boiled!) Great acting, great plot and amazing action scenes make this film a must for any hi-octane film fan. Masses of killings, masses of blood and the guns don't need reloading! A true modern classic!
Liked the film a lot. Decent early John Woo effort, well shot and keeps you hooked. The awful subtitling and dubbing however has to be seen and heard to be beleived!
Has got to be in as one of the top ten shoot em ups ever . lots of close quarters action and point blank aswell. plenty of over kill and a few extra bullets to make sure. explosive entertainment.
