SynopsisNATIONAL BESTSELLER - Discover the game-changing theory of the cycles of history and what past generations can teach us about living through times of upheaval--with deep insights into the roles that Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials have to play--now with a new preface by Neil Howe. First comes a High, a period of confident expansion. Next comes an Awakening, a time of spiritual exploration and rebellion. Then comes an Unraveling, in which individualism triumphs over crumbling institutions. Last comes a Crisis--the Fourth Turning--when society passes through a great and perilous gate in history. William Strauss and Neil Howe will change the way you see the world--and your place in it. With blazing originality, The Fourth Turning illuminates the past, explains the present, and reimagines the future. Most remarkably, it offers an utterly persuasive prophecy about how America's past will predict what comes next. Strauss and Howe base this vision on a provocative theory of American history. The authors look back five hundred years and uncover a distinct pattern: Modern history moves in cycles, each one lasting about the length of a long human life, each composed of four twenty-year eras--or "turnings"--that comprise history's seasonal rhythm of growth, maturation, entropy, and rebirth. Illustrating this cycle through a brilliant analysis of the post-World War II period, The Fourth Turning offers bold predictions about how all of us can prepare, individually and collectively, for this rendezvous with destiny., NATIONAL BESTSELLER . With startling originality, The Fourth Turning illuminates the past, explains the present, and reimagines the future. Most remarkably, it offers an utterly persuasive prophecy about how America's past will predict its future. William Strauss and Neil Howe base this vision on a provocative theory of American history. The authors look back five hundred years and uncover a distinct pattern: Modern history moves in cycles, each one lasting about the length of a long human life, each composed of four eras--or "turnings"--that last about twenty years and that always arrive in the same order. First comes a High, a period of confident expansion as a new order takes root after the old has been swept away. Next comes an Awakening, a time of spiritual exploration and rebellion against the now-established order. Then comes an Unraveling, an increasingly troubled era in which individualism triumphs over crumbling institutions. Last comes a Crisis--the Fourth Turning--when society passes through a great and perilous gate in history. Together, the four turnings comprise history's seasonal rhythm of growth, maturation, entropy, and rebirth. Strauss and Howe locate 1990s America as midway through an Unraveling, putting us currently in the era of Crisis. In a brilliant analysis of the post-World War II period, they show how generational dynamics are the key to understanding the cycles of American history. They draw vivid portraits of all the modern generations: the can-do G.I.s, the mediating Silent, the values-absorbed Boomers, the pragmatic 13ers, and the Millennials. Placed in the context of history's long rhythms, the persona and role of each generation become clear--as does the inevitability of a Crisis. Whatever your stage of life, The Fourth Turning offers bold predictions about how all of us can prepare, individually and collectively, for America's next rendezvous with destiny.

Society is cyclical, and it always has been

Truly eye opening, an explanation of who we are, amd where we're headed. Written in 1997 this book accurately predicts what is happening in American society 14 years later.

  • Most critical review

    Ignores Vietnam Generation

This book requires the reader to take a leap of faith. It is way too general to be of any use other than a speculation. The author's dislike for the baby boomer generation is obvious, as he points out how selfish and greedy they are. HOWEVER, the authors conveniently overlook the service of many in the Vietnam War, and the betrayal by friends and government upon returning. This book is heavy on speculation, a smattering of facts, and half of the book is setting up the thesis (history, events, are cyclical). It is a laborious read, and you'd be better off just reading about the various eras in separate books with more depth.

  • A fundamental change in the US is taking place now.

A historical summary of the phases of change for about each hundred years in the US. At each final (fourth) turning deep serious changes take place. Listen to the current news and the "prophecy" is taking place & coming true.

  • Enlightening Read Shedding Light on Current Events

Have been hearing references to this book for several years. Finally, I took the time to look it up and purchase it. It is well worth the read. Interesting take on the cyclical nature of history with an emphasis on the American story. It is really enlightening and lends an interesting take on the times we currently live in. Written in 1997, it is amazingly prophetical to events in 2022.

  • Eyeopener

To everything there is a season...which is the basis for The Fourth Turning. History has cycles...centuries...and the more things change the more they remain the same. Read this. Not a trip to the beach read, but important
