An informative look back at the past.
I bought a copy of this book as I was collecting the Silver Link 'Classic Steam' books and this one came up on the search. The edition I looked at was a softback one with the same design style as the 'Classic Steam' titles. I noted that it was a softback reprint and, preferring to buy hardback rather than paperback books, I opted for this older edition of the book which is a bringing together of two earlier books, both of which were softbacks also! Given the similarity in style with the 'Classic Steam' series, I was somewhat surprised to find that this book in all it's incarnations is a fair bit smaller than the afore-mentioned series, which I found a little disappointing. Of course, had I read the seller information, I should have found this out prior to purchase. The book itself is ... The book itself is a look back at the closing years of steam on the west coast main line and it's several branches, centred on Lancaster and it's immediate environs, where the author's father and, later, he himself, worked. As it's title suggests, the book is essentially a photographic album and the chapters are arranged according to the routes which passed through Lancaster. As somebody who has holidayed in the locations depicted, I found the book to be fascinating and it answered many questions I had about the railways in the area. The location map at the beginning was a very useful tool while looking at the pictures although I should have liked maps of a broader area also. Picture reproduction on my copy was excellent, my only regret being that I should have liked them to have been a little larger in order to better be able to appreciate the detail. That said, the photographs cover many locations which I have not seen depicted before and, as the author was a professional railwayman, many are from unusual or privileged locations. All in all, I enjoyed the book and found it informative and instructive. Why the publishers didn't take the opportunity to enlarge the book at it's latest incarnation, I don't know, as that would have improved things in my opinion. Nevertheless, for anybody interested in the closing years of steam in this particular area of the country, I would feel very happy recommending it.
