Matt Smith The eleventh Dr Who?
Series 5 vol 2 is made up of The Time of Angels and Flesh & Stone which are parts I & II of the same story, followed by Vampires in Venice, oh and a bonus feature of The Monster Files where everyone says how good the monsters are, and the writer tells us how clever he was at inventing Stone Angels that are scarier than the Daleks. (The man is delusional in my opinion.) These are the Stone Angels that first cropped up in the David Tennant series. In fact Dr Who seems very concerned with developing threads of plots from past and future episodes. Time of Angles and Flesh and Stone contain a character who constantly refers to her (mysterious) relationship with the Dr in the future, and I think she may have cropped up in earlier episodes. Anyway lots of “lightly veiled references to ... Anyway lots of “lightly veiled references to “consequences” I confess I tend to find the monsters in Dr Who rather lame: poor science, usually no physiological relation to their environment or to the food chain. So in these episodes we have Stone Angels who turn others in Stone Angels and then Renaissance Venetian characters who appear as vampires but are really giant crayfish. The scripts in Dr Who I feel, are sometimes very wanting. However visuals, especially in the first 2 episodes, are very impressive. And how is Matt Smith doing as the Doctor? O.K. I suppose but he is trying to be David Tennant, with all that frenetic energy and verbal wit that the Tennant, as the Doctor, was so good at. I don't think Smith can technically do the patter, mainly because he has a very slight sibilance/speech impediment. However another problem for him mirroring Tennant is that physically he really quite gawky, so he is not as sexy as Tennant or Eccleston, and ever since Rose Tyler is seems obligatory that there is sexual energy between the Doctor and his sidekick. The current sidekick is Karen Gillan, again reviving a character from the Tennant series. Not sure about her either. I find her irritating and annoying, which she possibly is and I suppose she is supposed to be, so that all those irritating, annoying, pubescent school-girls fan can identify with her. Am I just too old for being a Dr Who fan as 61? More than probably but as long as they keep churning them out I know am going to feel compelled to watch them. I.M.
