"On what slender threads do life and fortune hang.". Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) was the son of Napoleon's famous general Dumas. A prolific author, his body of work includes a number of popular classics, including The Three Musketeers and The Man in the Iron Mask.
It has taken me a week to get halfway as it has over 1200 pages but it is without doubt so far one of the great novels, beautifully written or translated in this penguin version, thus making it very absorbing and thoroughly entertaining.
The film versions athough not bad do not do this story anywhere close to the rightful amount of justice this book deserves as there is so much content to enjoy that a 2 or 3 hour movie can only scratch the surface to produce only a "greatest hits" style of interpretation.
In summary, read it for yourself and you will not be disappointed.
Also the copy I have although it is second hand, it is in very good nick and I will definitely purchase other books from this company in the future.
