Something hypnotic about the contrast between the sheer splendour of the African landscape and the characters' somewhat silly, bored and depressing antics, together with the delicious and wicked contrast between what they have escaped or run from - England in 1940 with its back to the wall - and the hedonism and power of what money can buy, ie immunity from the law. Sacchi's beauty is mesmeric, especially when she arches her neck in defiance of Ackland's rifle butt, and as for Dance, there are no words to describe his masculine beauty - that is the only word for it. The identity of the murderer of Lord Errol is now known, as a written confession by the Sarah Miles character has since been discovered, but that doesn't detract from the sinuous sexuality and poetic tension of this masterpiece of filmmaking.Read full review
