A good vocabulary is at the heart of 11 plus and Common Entrance exams, such as those set by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM), compiled by Durham University, and Granada Learning (GL), also known as NFER. Both the verbal reasoning and comprehension sections of these exams typically contain questions to test breadth of vocabulary and ability to infer meaning for previously unknown words. This book contains intentionally difficult and unfamiliar vocabulary to encourage students to infer the meaning of new words from the context of the given classic or contemporary passage.
