    Zefal Dooback vs Cateye BM500

I bought a Zefal Dooback mirror to compare with my existing Cateye BM500. The problem I experienced with the Cateye was that it vibrated on so many UK rural roads that such that I couldn't see what was behind me. The structural support between the handlebar fitting and the mirror coupled with the mirror's characteristic mass is under engineered in my assessment. Both mirrors are designed around a friction adjustable ball and socket joint but the Dooback uses the same screw to clamp both the handlebar attachment and the mirror adjustment, which is a chunky 26mm diameter. This also makes the train of structural support elements shorter and less prone to vibration. The ball and socket on the BM500 is only 10mm and its mirror is further extended from its support by a plastic cylindrical arm ...

Very good bike mirror but the design could be slightly improved

This is a good mirror. The only aspect I would like to be changed is the indexing on the swing of the mirror. It has a couple of positions it pops to (folded in and folded out). I would prefer it if it didn't have the indexing, and it was held in position with friction. This is because the preset position for the folded out state is not quite where I want it to be. It is not a big problem but I find I often have to adjust it slightly inwards from the preset position to get the best view of the road behind. I find the mirror useful for spotting drivers that are passing dangerously without having to look over my shoulder every few seconds. Obviously, it doesn't replace a proper look behind before a turn.

  • Hours wasted!

OK, let me start this review by saying I'm not big into bikes or cycling so maybe I'm missing something here BUT....... Having just opened the packaging for a replacement mirror that had been forwarded following what now appears to be an identical fault on the original one I am at a total loss as to HOW these mirrors are suppose to work. On the two I have been supplied you basically get a bolt that connects the mirror assembly into the handlebars. That's great but - there is NO WHERE or nut for this bolt to screw into!!!! So what I'm left with is a plastic tube with a bolt that just turns aimlessly within it? Now it could be that there should be some "preinstalled" facility within the handle bar that came with the bike that would take this bolt but if there is I will be jiggered if I can ...

  • A good safety item for cycles.

Great for seeing what's behind, as these days many cars are so quiet you don't know that the are there until it's too late. As one gets older turning to look behind becomes dangerous as stability is affected and "wobbles occure quite frequently. Folds nicely, with good relocation on return. Safe -easy to fold on impact. Location on outside of bars is ideal.

  • Needed the help of a mirror!

As a life long cyclist who has a great hearing problem, cycling mirrors are a boon to warn me of approaching cars from the rear. I have two Dahon folding cycles. Both of my bicycles have this mirror fitted. This mirror is to go on a 1990's Dahon 'Tailwind' 26" folding cycle where it is giving good service. I find you have to keep the Allen key locking nut of the mirror tight as being at the handlebar end and prone to knocks the rear view 'departs' unless the locking bolt is well done up. A good purchase!
