This was an early Genesis title, so one can't fault it for being fairly simple, but for what it is, it is an enjoyable distraction. There aren't a variety of options and no multiplayer, but that's fine, because this is a great port of a decent arcade shooter. There are difficulty levels, and on the easy difficulty level you have infinite continues. You get less on normal and the least on hard. If you compare this to the arcade game, you'll note subtle uses of color, shading, and a little more depth in the graphics, but those who did the port did a great job of preserving most of the image information. In fact, unless you're putting them side by side or have been playing the arcade version a lot lately, you may not be able to tell the difference! The game itself is your standard vertical scrolling space shooter, with three types of armaments you can have for your ship (which explodes in one hit): Normal shots (a spread of red bullets) Thunder Laser (big green bolts) Truxton Beam (a blue lightning bolt that spans the screen and can home in on bigger ships to do continuous damage) You also have large skull themed bombs that can be dropped to blow up a cluster of enemies who fly into it, deal massive damage to bosses, or, more commonly, to save yourself from enemy bullets when you're about to be hit. Finally, the real strategy in the game is picking up the "P"'s. These P's, when accumulated, upgrade your weapon, so you fire more shots, beams, bolts, etc. It's a real annoyance then, when you get wasted and lose all or most of your progress. The sound is adequate for this type of game, and you may find it stuck in your head over time, but nothing too memorable. The controls are easy enough, with one button firing your limited bombs, one firing your shots, and the other a "rapid fire" button, which is handy if you don't have a rapid fire controller (and your fingers WILL get tired after awhile, especially if you don't use the Truxton Beam exclusively). Start button pauses, and you can move your ship in eight directions.Read full review
Ever wanted to feel like a rock-star spaceship pilot / shooter? Thanks to Toaplan's quality title Truxton, that pleasure can become a reality in your very own home. Truxton is a challenging yet very fair and rewarding space ship shooter with elements of strategy including red, blue and green weapons that change fire type (don't underestimate the Truxton beam!) as well as ship upgrades and bombs that eliminate on-screen fire. There is some brief memorization to the levels but Truxton is manageable thanks to an amazingly comfortable / functional controller, multiple checkpoints and player chosen difficulty that affects the number of credits allotted to the player (one could potentially see the whole game through playing on easy). To top it off, the soundtrack to Truxton is well composed, motivating and compliments the rapid and shift-shaping level design quite nicely with delightfully crisp Sega Genesis audio quality. If you like space ship shooter games, don't deny yourself the pleasure that is Truxton on the Sega Genesis.Read full review
I don't know why I keep coming back to TRUXTON. Never since the METROID games have I ever been so infuriated and frustrated. It is asinine and unfair how enemy crafts come at you from the side and *behind* you, yet you can only shoot *forward*! Plus the bosses are hard enough, but the game also expects you to contend with dozens of turrets atop the giant mechanical monstrosities. And when you destroy them, that's still not the end of the stage! There's another barrage of lesser enemies to deal with, and should you die you have to defeat the boss *again*! TRUXTON does everything in its power to piss you off, yet provides enough satisfying shooter action to keep you coming back.
Awesome game, if you like shooters then this is a must have for your collection, it's the same game as Truxton in Japanese and you don't need to know Japanese in order to play it.

Truxton is a great port of an arcade shooter. It's a little old school in the graphics department, but great sound and game play make up for it. This bad boy is pretty hard though. It falls into the your going to have to memorize a lot of the levels before you succeed category of shooters.

The best vertical shootem-up on the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis. If you get the chance, buy it. After 22 years, the game still looks, sounds and plays awesome.
