The subtitles in this movie are done so well, one almost forgets the movie was done in French. The words seem to glide effortlessly off of Cyrano de Bergerac's tongue, as if only he were meant to speak them. It almost makes you jealous of Cirano's eloquence. Even those with no appreciation of poetry whatsoever can still find this movie entertaining. The action is enthralling; the cinematography, endearing; the movie, entertaining. A must see film if you enjoy poetry, romance, humor, action, suspense, period pieces, aesthetically pleasing images, theatre, French, English, other languages, large noses, good movies, or any combination of the above. In short, rent it, buy it or steal it. Just make sure you watch it. And don't blame me if you get caught stealing it.
The first time I saw this movie was on a Thanksgiving day when I was quite young. My Uncles and male cousins were watching it waiting for football to begin and I couldn't believe how animated my oldest cousin was getting as the story progressed. I had never seen him that excited before and never saw it again. I was too young to fully appreciate the romantic humor of the story but I did like the swordplay and the funny guy with the funny nose. I remembered it years later and this was one of the first tapes I bought when I got my first VCR. Now, as an adult, I can fully appreciate the beauty of Rostrand's words given form and animation by Jose' Ferrer's broad stage-style, and occasionally over-the-top, acting, and empathize with the story's insecure and noble hero Cyrano. What we have is a cinematic masterpiece that is still thoroughly entertaining without the slightest touch of CGI, technical effects or even color.Read full review
A great film about one of literature's great characters. Sadly, though. it's a terrible "print" with many scratches, splotches and "jumps where the original apparently broke & was badly spliced back together. Jose Ferrer's brilliant performance won a well-earned Oscar and the entire cast shines. Carl Foreman's adaptation of the original Rostand play under Michael Gordon's direction make this an almost perfect film which I'm very happy to have in practically any viewable condition.

The film is an absolute classic, the best version of Edmond Rostand play. A must see of any theater or classic film fan. Despite its age, it still holds up to the standards of today, and even placing many modern films to shame, with its comedic wit, passionate drama, and heart felt tragedy. The performances are captivating and the passion that José Ferrer brings to the role is unequalled before or since, a true master actor in one of his finest performances, supported by a great and endearing cast each bring believability to the characters they play, thus making this an enjoy and treat to watch, over and over again. However, the film condition and adaption to digital could be better, and I wish that a better digital remastered version was available so that younger generations can begin to enjoy and appreciate this classic piece of film and theatrical art.Read full review
