This is the first adventure with Jon Pertwee as the third Doctor. It was a considerable change for the series. not only was the lead actor changing (which had happened before) but it was being shown in colour and it was being set on earth with UNIT and it's supporting cast being major players. In fact, everything had changed bar the Tardis. I grew up with Pertwee as the Doctor - he was my doctor - though I can't remember seeing any before 1972ish (I was only 5 when Spearhead was broadcast.) So it's good to see the beginning of a character I grew up with, sort of like seeing an origin story. The supporting cast are good. Caroline John makes her first appearance as the doctor's assistant, a scientist with a welcome pechant for miniskirts (on the commentary track, she tells of how she got very few auditions till she gave her agent a new photograph, one with her up a ladder in a bikini. The offers started flooding in at that point.) She works well as the sceptical scientist, but I wonder how long that can last - now she's repelled an alien invasion, she can't be too sceptical any more (that alkways annoyed me about Scully in the X files.) And there's Nicholas Courtenay making his third appearance as Brigadier Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, head of UNIT. Bizarrely, the military man is less sceptical than the scientist though, as I remember, this doesn't last. He plays his role well and the UNIT soldiers (all extras) play their role of cannon fodder quite well also. All in all a good intro to the third Doctor. I'm going to get The Silurians to see how it develops.Read full review
Spearhead from Space is an exciting story which builds up a great episode for the third doctor's debut. It is eerie and full of suspense, and also introduces some of Doctor Who's most iconic villains, the autons and nestene consciousness. Spearhead in my opinion is one of the top episodes of the Pertwee years, and possibly the best auton story made up to now. As well as the introduction of Jon Pertwee and his doctor, this story also introduces a new companion to accompany him (this doesn't happen often as companions normally stay on with at least two doctors). Elizabeth Shaw/Caroline John was only in Who for a season but showed great potential. It was also from this episode that UNIT became a familiar aspect to the show until the end of the third doctor's era. With this came regular appearances from the brigadier (who has a large role to play within this story). In my opinion, anything with the brig can't be a bad thing. Overall I believe Spearhead is one of Who's masterpieces that will go on to entertain people for many years to come. I give it a 9/10 (as there is always room for perfection).Read full review
Spearhead from space is the firs out of the brilliant jon pertwee as the newley regenerated Dr Who.In His First story the dr is exiled to earth where he comes up against the nestine aliens who have the ability to manipulate plastic and bring widow shop manekins to life. This is a fantastic first story for jon pertwee and a must for every who fan it is still as brilliant now as it was in 1970.
This is a very good story line & the acting is all very good, some of the 80's episodes of Doctor Who had appauling actors in them BUT I believe the 70's Doctors & assistants are buy far the most profesional & convinsing. When you consider that this was made in 1970 I think that the special effects even though limited are still pretty good, they do the job nicely & don't damage the shows credability. All round this is a good example of why Doctor Who came back to our TV screens & has remained popular for over 40 years!!!
