Could have been so much more..
We enjoy period dramas, and have several DVD's of movies made from Dickens' writings. This particular film is very well acted for the most part, but being much shorter than others titles we have (93 min) it felt like there was much of the story that could have been enhanced with more detail. In particular, it sort of seemed like the ending was rushed... --SPOILER ALERT!--(Such as Nell getting deathly ill and passing into unconsciousness after being out in a rainstorm for like 5 minutes; then her waking up and following her grandpa out into the snowy woods; and then running through the woods when she realizes he has seen her; only to lapse into another fitful feverish unconsciousness; and finally just to wake up enough to see her father, forgive her worthless grandfather.... and then DIE!) ... We enjoy period dramas, and have several DVD's of movies made from Dickens' writings. It probably would have been more convincing if they had chosen a skinny, frail little actress for the part of Nell... But, it is Dickens...and not having read the book (I know, I know) I think it was a good production overall, and we'll watch it again sometime.

While this version of The Old Curiosity Shop is well done, personally I prefer the much longer BBC version with Trevor Peacock. In this ninety minute video I thought all of the main characters are a little miscast. Nell is not sufficiently young and fragile, Toby Jones's Quilp is not as evil (or as dwarf-like) as Trevor Peacock and there was not enough time to fully develop the characters. Way too short.
The product, per se was fine. The problem is with the story in the movie compared to the book. Kit, who is the main character in the book, has this miniscule part in the movie. By cutting him out, BBC managed to get the story into one episode and in a short period of time...............My advice, wait for the mini-series...........mh

Good telling of this Dickens' story.
The villian Quilp in this version of The Old Curiosity Shop really makes your skin crawl. Also, Derek Jacobi's grandfather is rather pushy and not as pleasant to little Nell as in other versions I've seen which makes for a more realistic story, I think. You'll enjoy it.
