A late Billy Wilder masterpiece almost forgotten
Excellent actors and delightful soundtrack music written by Miklos Rozsa. It is a great pity that Billy Wilder's excellent piece was butchered by a third which interrupts the flow of the story. The blu ray edition has a very thorough 51 page booklet which was most illuminating and interesting.

Don't expect a 'serious' Holmes movie. This is more of an affectionate pastiche. Baker St never looked more beautiful on screen, and it's a pity more wasn't made of such a wonderful set. With his wavy hair and nasal drawl, Robert Stephens' Holmes is more akin to Oscar Wilde than the great detective. Colin Blakely is a rather excitable Dr Watson. It's left to Christopher Lee to give the best performance in the film as Holmes' brother, Mycroft. Picture quality on blu ray is glorious. Highly recommended.Don't expect a 'serious' Holmes movie.
