John Elder (Wayne) has a reputation as a ruthless gunfighter and has killed many men. His father was shot in the back about six months ago after a card game. In that game, he lost his ranch and land and water rights. Even though he could write his name, his signature on the deed was an "X". Nobody knows who shot him, but there are witnesses who all claimed that he signed the deed with an "X". Now, John's mother, Katie, is also dead. John is watching the funeral from the nearby mountains. His brothers, played by Dean Martin, Earl Holliman, and Dennis Hopper are there too. John has to be careful just where he rides into, with lots of young men eager to try his hand and die. Following the funeral john and his three brothers go to town to see the martial about what happened. They are treated poorly by the deputy but OK by the sheriff. He tells them that there is no suspect in their father's death and that with witnesses, he is powerless to fight the deed. At the bank, they find out that Katie died penniless. Going around to settle her debts, they find that everybody else owed her money. One thing is sure, the man who now owns their former ranch is anxious for them to go or be dead. As John and his brothers begin asking questions, the sheriff is shot down and killed. The Elders were almost 100 miles away when it happened picking up a herd of horses. They were still arrested by the deputy. Being taken to another city for trial, they are attacked in an effort to kill the Elders. This failed anf John was able to escape. He takes the son of the big shot and makes him talk. He tells the truth about how Elder senior was swindled and killed. The Elders are vindicated.Read full review
