Great camera. High quality lens, 3x optical zoom, 3x digital, and offers full-automatic to full-manual control over almost everything, including shutter speed, aperture, contrast etc. The usual range of auto modes, e.g. portrait, snow, and a useful set of 3 low-light modes. Operates well in low light, has a bright orange auto-focus assist lamp and a nice close-focus macro mode (both v. useful options for taking photos of things for Ebay). The flash throttles back the intensity of the light for close-ups (you can also set brightness manually) Depth of field seems very narrow at macro with wide aperture (which can make for nice shots, providing your focus is accurate) 7 megapixels max, a huge, high quality rear screen and an optical viewfinder that zooms in and out with the lens. Point, centre and multi-point light metering for getting your exposure just right, and spot/multi autofocus with on-screen indicators to show which bits of the picture the camera has locked onto. You can also lock the focus to a number of preset distances. Clean, modern appearance, solid build quality, slightly large by modern standards but not off-puttingly so. Takes Mem stick / Duo / Pro memory and uses standard AA batteries, so no expensive proprietary batteries to replace. Can shoot movies with sound (has built in mic) at a decent resolution and encodes in MPEG format (easier to use and edit than quicktime/.mov IMO). Has some built-in memory, but as usual with digital cameras you'll want to get a memory card/stick to use it properly. Note that this camera requires the 'Pro' version of the memory in order to use the highest resolution of movie-capture and the fastest multi-shot modes. Shutter lag is pretty low, AF is usually very fast, and power-up is very rapid. Battery life is pretty good on 2000mah NiMH AA batteries (supposedly around 200-300 shots). On screen menus are snappy and well-presented, though some options are slightly tedious to reach when there's a lot of them. Optional on-screen real-time histogram is nice to make sure you get the best detail in shadows and best spread of contrast/brightness. Default white balance tends slightly towards warm in my experience so far (mostly tested on indoors, auto-white balance + fill in flash, macro mode (taking photos for Ebay!) The only thing this camera lacks that my trusty old Nikon 2100 had is a manual/preset white balance mode (point the camera at something white, click, white balance is now correctly set for current light conditions - another handy feature for Ebay photography). Instead there is an auto mode and a handful of usual presets - fluorescent, flash, incandescent, cloudy etc. They do an adequate job but you may need to white-balance your photos afterwards in an image editor if you want the colours as true as possible. In summary: For: Excellent quality, great value. Suitable for beginners and pros. Packed with features, but can run very well in point-and-shoot/auto modes. High quality lens and macro mode. Good general purpose camera, and also very suitable for Ebay work - a great all-rounder. Great movie mode with sound, but you'll need a large capacity Duo-pro memory card to take best advantage of it. Good non-proprietary features - AA batteries, MPEG recording. Excellent AF-lamp. Against: Lacks a full manual white balance.Read full review
A replacement for my dive camera that got a little wet! Sony make so few 'dive proof' cases that this DSC W7 has a great case if you pick the dog hair out first! Original lasted 6 years before getting soaked. Okay it is not megapixel city, but if you are a diver and can get a case then it does great movies as well as photos. Cases are on eBay as well. Fits in your pocket, if you get a good one on eBay, then its cheaper than £'sss. After all, unless going to print high quality A3 prints, 7.2 Mega pixel is fine. Photography is one of my hobbies and do not buy kit unless it is worth it! My other camera is a Canon EOS 50D, but wife will not let me dive with it!
My second one of these cameras - they are not waterproof! I love it because it takes AA batteries - they will NOT be discontinued! It is really easy to use and takes good quality pictures. I also needed a camera that would take the larger memory sticks as I had several of them already. It was difficult to find but will be a treasured possesion!
