Gust's long-running Atelier series returns with a new adventure and a completely new alchemy system in Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book. Gamers take control of Sophie, a young beginner alchemist who discovers a walking, talking book named Plachta that claims to be the physical embodiment of alchemy. Unfortunately, Plachta has amnesia, so it's up to gamers to help restore her memories and her human form. As always, the action emphasizes collecting materials, learning recipes, and synthesizing, but also adds a mix of exploration and turn-based battles.<br><br>Players move the narrative along by obtaining recipe ideas, which can be acquired by engaging in battle, exploring, or fulfilling quests. Gamers can then take on the alchemy mini-game, which is a five-step process that involves placing shapes on a puzzle board. The world of Atelier Sophie changes depending on the time of day and the weather, with certain materials available only at specific times, and characters altering their daily routines based on the weather conditions. When not battling or synthesizing, players can head to the local café/bar to accept new quests and hear rumors.
