The main reason I purchased "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet" was the heckling potential. This film was first introduced to me in Ninth Grade at the end of a Shakespeare unit, and it almost caused me to be removed from the aforementioned class for laughing too loud. This is definitely not a movie for those who are serious about their Shakespeare. Much of the movie is confusing and too overacted to be taken seriously. However, it does offer an interesting, modern day take on Romeo and Juliet. I would only purchase this product if you are already familiar with the film and its quirks.
I bought this CD because I had seen Baz Luhrman's version on TV and was very impressed. I loved the way he had kept Shakespeare's original words but cleverly updated the scenes to make them more contemporary, or even futuristic. The acting is superb and the whole production is a feast for the eyes and ears. If you like Shakespeare you should try to locate a copy of this CD and buy it.
Baz Luhrmann's vision is beautiful and intense. Claire Danes brings a subtle modern strength to her Juliet and a young Leonardo DiCaprio captures the charm and impetuousness of Shakespeare's prototype. John Leguizamo delivers a standout performance as a bravado-filled Tybalt. Shakespeare meets hip-hop--and rocks it out!
