Great Jazz bass guide.
The book “Jazz Bass”, by Ed Friedland, is a great guide for the bassist looking for introduction to bass playing in Jazz music. It is not intended for the beginner bassist, as you will not find information about basic playing techniques or skills. It will rather provide you with an approach to developing the set of both practical and theoretical skills necessary to playing the bass in Jazz music. It is written in a clear and agreeable language and structured in chapters leading you through the field of Jazz music. While studying it, you will find reference to the different competences you will need to develop to become a successful Jazz bass player. In some cases, however, either you have already been introduced to a particular subject this book will only refer to as important, without ... The book “Jazz Bass”, by Ed Friedland, is a great guide for the bassist looking for introduction to bass playing in Jazz music. It is not intended for the beginner bassist, as you will not find information about basic playing techniques or skills. It will rather provide you with an approach to developing the set of both practical and theoretical skills necessary to playing the bass in Jazz music. It is written in a clear and agreeable language and structured in chapters leading you through the field of Jazz music. While studying it, you will find reference to the different competences you will need to develop to become a successful Jazz bass player. In some cases, however, either you have already been introduced to a particular subject this book will only refer to as important, without providing thorough explanation, or you will need to find alternative, more in-depth, sources to learn it from. I believe it would make it a better manual if more theory regarding some key sections was included, not necessarily regarding specific bass playing, but Jazz music in general. The book also provides exercises for every section, referring to an included CD with over 50 play-along tracks, conveniently using a slip-stereo mix (with piano and drums on the right channel and bass and drums on the left channel), making your practice much easier and a great deal more enjoyable. This way, I believe Ed Friedland’s “Jazz Bass” is an excellent tutorial for the bassist seeking introduction to the world of Jazz bass playing. I would certainly recommend it if you are a bassist seeking introduction to the world of Jazz music.
