I have long been a fan of Jack Kirbys' 1960's artwork and a Captain America fan so to have one volume that collects Kirbys' first run on Cap is a must have. Yes some stories have "plot holes", to be polite, but that doesn't detract from Kirbys' dynamic artwork even when he only does layouts for other artists to pencil over. Bear in mind when these stories were originally issued comic books cost 12 cents for a 32 page book so we're not talking Shakespeare here, although, truth be told, I've never been a big fan of Will S! I've read through the individual Marvel Masterpiece volumes and the first thing I notice in comparison is the better quality here in the linework reproduction. Images are much sharper and probably cleaner than originally printed! My main complaint is that the publisher messed up the color scheme on Buckys' costume in the stories he appears in. Instead of having red leggings with blue shorts the colors are reversed but like I said that is my main complaint... well, that and a pin-up of Cap from volume 1 of the masterworks first print got lost and the weight of this volume; but it's still lighter than the Fantastic Four & Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus'. Bottom line on this Omnibus: 5 stars overall, minus 1/8 star for the color of Buckys' shorts! (I know there's a joke in there but I'm not gonna go there!) Excelsior!Read full review
