Synopsis
Blaise Pascal, the precociously brilliant contemporary of Descartes, was a gifted mathematician and physicist, but it is his unfinished apologia for the Christian religion upon which his reputation now rests. The Pensees is a collection of philosohical fragments, notes and essays in which Pascal explores the contradictions of human nature in pscyhological, social, metaphysical and - above all - theological terms. Mankind emerges from Pascal's analysis as a wretched and desolate creature within an impersonal universe, but who can be transformed through faith in God's grace., Blaise Pascal, the precociously brilliant contemporary of Descartes, was a gifted mathematician and physicist, but it is his unfinished apologia for the Christian religion upon which his reputation now rests. • pieces of pascal, a pinch here and there

How can anyone only give Pascal 3 stars? Basically, this has to do with general accessibility. A philosophy student would be better apt to make sense of this book. Surely Pascal is a genius, but the amassing of his final notes makes this a difficult read. Sure, he is quote-worthy, but they are few and far between. This book is very, very disjointed, like skimming over someone's class notes. Ideas are in point-form and situated all over the place. The book has no flow, making the author's train of thought difficult to trace. If you are a student of theology, you will find some of his ideas helpful. He is a deep thinker who puts an interesting spin on commonly held explanations. This book would be good for apologists, not to mention philosophy students of course.
