Product Information
Drama set in a deeply religious, repressed community in the north of Scotland. Bess McNeil (Emily Watson) is young and naïve when she meets and falls in love with a Danish oil-rig worker (Stellan Skarsgard). When Jan breaks his neck aboard the rig, ending their sexual relationship, he urges Bess to take another lover and tell him the details. As Bess becomes more deviant in her sexual behaviour, she comes to believe that her actions are guided by god and are helping Jan recover.
