Ein Hund aus Flandern - eine tragisch-schoene Geschichte um den Jungen Nello, der eines Tages zusammen mit seinem Grossvater im Strassengraben einen Hund findet, der als Zugtier eines Fuhrwerks von seinem Besitzer missbraucht wurde. Der Hund wird Patrasche getauft, und eine einzigartige Freundschaft verbindet die beiden, eine Freundschaft, die die Armut und die Not des Grossvaters und seines Enkels fast vergessen macht. Ihren Lebensunterhalt verdienen sie sich mit dem Transport und dem Verkauf der Milch von den Bauern im Dorf im nahe gelegenen Antwerpen. Heimlich traumt der Junge davon, als Kunstler beruhmt zu werden. Von diesem Traum wissen nur Patrasche und Alois, die Tochter des Mullers. Sein groesster Wunsch ist es, einmal in der Kathedrale von Antwerpen die beiden Gemalde von Rubens zu sehen, die dort nur gegen einen Obolus, den der arme Junge nicht aufbringen kann, zu bestaunen sind. Die einzige Chance, seine Traume wahr zu machen, ist ein Zeichenwettbewerb in der Rubensstadt Antwerpen, der mit einem Stipendium dotiert ist. An Heiligabend soll der Gewinner verkundet werden. Wird es fur Nello und Patrasche ein gluckliches Weihnachtsfest werden? Diese Geschichte ging im woertlichen Sinne um die Welt, als 1908 nach dem Tod der britischen Autorin in Italien ein in New York lebender japanischer Diplomat in der Zeitung einen Nachruf las und einem Freund in der Heimat einen Band mit dieser Erzahlung empfahl. Bereits wenige Monate spater wurde die erste von vielen japanischen UEbersetzungen veroeffentlicht, die sich als veritabler Longseller herausstellte. Nicht zuletzt dank der auf dieser Erzahlung basierenden Zeichentrickserie Niklaas, ein Junge aus Flandern kennt und liebt jedes Kind in Japan die beiden Protagonisten. Erstmals liegt Marie Louise de la Ramees Werk nun in einer deutschen UEbersetzung vor.
