Diana Gabaldon writes very believably about time travel. I'm impressed by her imagination. It's quite fascinating to me how she contrasts life over two hundred years ago with life today. The way she has the main character using modern medical knowledge and improvising in that other time. In this particular book, she did a very good job of describing life aboard ship making a very long voyage. Tough life. I appreciate the love story, didn't always appreciate some of the sex scenes in the books, but like the depth of genuine love the two main characters have for one another. The author obviously did a lot of research and gave her stories a great deal of thought. This must have been a very life-consuming work for her and she deserves all the success. Other people raved to me about this set of books, but I was only mildly interested since I don't usually read "romances", but I think this falls more in the category of historical fiction. I have a daughter who hounded me into reading the first book, and I was quickly hooked. I bought this particular one for her because she wants the set in hardcoverRead full review

excellent read that is part of a larger series of books. i am on book five. these are a slower read and saga length. it is a time commitment and hurts the brain for details. it is a fictional, historically based, paranormal slant romance. well researched and technically accurate they educate and entertain. great characterization. this and the other books are diverse, engaged and interesting. good read(s).
I have read all the books in this series more than once and am now purchasing them in hardcover. This series of books has EVERYTHING... centered around a fascinating 'love story' as it weaves its way through history. These books have passion, many religious views, herbal medicine, Celt history, occult, witchcraft, time travel, poetry, literature, past - present - and future, war, evil, pain, misery, unbounded love and devotion, miracle, birth, death, living, dying, humor, sadness, grief, joy, surprises, and mystery. The first of the series, "Outlander" - begins in 1940's Scotland; where the main character "Claire" is inexplicably transported to 1740's Scotland. The rest of the books and 'spin off' books, chronicle her life and some of those that she meets along the way.
you fall in love with Claire and Jamie, and Voyager like all Diana Gabaldon books is full of details and you don't want to miss a thing.
