Old and New Dreams was a unique, one of a kind ensemble. Made up of Ornette Coleman’s sidemen from the 50’s and 60’s this band recorded four albums together. It featured Don Cherry on trumpet, Dewey Redman on tenor saxophone and musette, Charlie Haden on bass and Ed Blackwell on drums. This CD opens with the group’s rendition of the hauntingly beautiful Ornette Coleman composition Lonely Woman. Redman’s melodic solo on this piece reveals the depth and resonance of his tone. Cherry’s solo is a sparse melody that continues the mood of Ornette’s theme as well as flashing glimmers of Miles Davis post 1964. Haden takes the final solo unaccompanied. He solo creates yet another beautiful melodic statement within the piece as well as showcasing his great wooden sound on the bass. The other performances include compositions by each of the band members along with an additional Coleman composition. The love these men had for this music as well as performing with one another come through very clearly on this recording. If you enjoy the music of Ornette Coleman you will enjoy this CD.Read full review
