Tiepolo passò la vita a eseguire opere su commissione in chiese, palazzi, ville. Talvolta affrescando vasti soffitti, come per la Residenz di Würzburg o per il Palazzo Reale di Madrid. Intorno scorreva la vita di un'epoca - il Settecento - che lo apprezzò e ammirò, ma senza troppo preoccuparsi di capirlo. Così fu più facile per Tiepolo sfuggirgli, quando volle dedicarsi a effigiare il suo segreto, che tale è rimasto, in una sequenza di trentatré incisioni: i Capricci e gli Scherzi. Ciascuno di quei fogli è il capitolo di un romanzo nero, abbagliante e muto, popolato da personaggi disparati e sconcertanti: efebi fiorenti, Satiresse, Orientali esoterici, gufi, serpenti e anche Pulcinella e Morte.
