Nell'agosto del 1968 un comitato "ad hoc" istituito dalla Harvard Medical School, propose una ridefinizione del tradizionale concetto di morte, fondato sulla cessazione delle attività cardio-polmonari. Secondo i nuovi criteri, che giustificavano ogni tipo di trapianti, per l'accertamento della morte sarebbe sufficiente un riscontro strettamente neurologico: la definitiva cessazione delle funzioni del cervello, definito coma "irreversibile". Questi criteri neurologici, fatti propri da molti legislatori occidentali, sembrano aver oggi perduto la giustificazione scientifica sulla quale era stato inizialmente fondato il loro impiego. Nel corso degli anni dalla loro prima applicazione hanno fatto la loro comparsa numerose evidenze cliniche, che sono risultate inesplicabili alla luce dei dati scientifici, hanno sollevato interrogativi innanzitutto di natura medico-biologica, ma anche etico-filosofica, teologica, giuridica - ed hanno contribuito a riaprire un dibattito apparentemente ...
