The Cure are one of those bands that I was really into and then suddenly I fell out of love with them around the time of the ‘head on the door‘ album. This was a favourite for years and has sat in the vinyl collection unplayed for years despite ‘a strange day‘ being one of my favourite Cure tracks. Still a quick £1.37 purchase via e-bay and the CD is sitting on the creaking family CD player. And mighty fine it sounds to. The Cure’s singer - Robert Smith - has one of those voices you love or hate. It does however suit this period of the Cure’s musical output which to my mind (do I need help?) is a cheerless chug through the nether regions of illness, depression and general misery. Help me but I love it and although I loved the individual bleak pop songs of ‘3 Imaginary Boys’, as an album this one is a blaster picking the listener up by the throat and giving them a good shake. “ Give me your eyes so I might see” - A strange day has kicked in. Oh that droning repetitive keyboard playing and great guitar licks with chugging bass and drumming. I’d also forgotten how good ’100 years’ was as well and unlike anything they had done up to that point. Check out as well ‘the Hanging Garden’ - a largely drum lead track that works brilliantly. Smiths voice is the trick that carries this off and the desperate sadness comes over well on tracks like ‘Cold’ and ‘Siamese twins‘. Cold keyboards and distorted voices kick off the title track before drums drown out the voices but still those keyboards building then guitar and then bass and then more distorted voices and about three and a half minutes in, Smiths voice appears in the maelstrom with the classic line “I must fight this sickness - find a cure”. Who says he has no sense of humour? So if you like your pop bright and breezy and like Barry Manilow then this album is for you because that’s how I used to be many years ago. But my life changed and now? Now? I need help and fast. Recommended if you dare.Read full review
