Director William Crain's entertaining follow-up to BLACULA stars Bernie Casey (formerly of the L.A. Rams) as Dr. Henry Pride, a prominent black physician who partakes of an experimental formula for the treatment of liver disease -- which turns out to be a close chemical cousin to Dr. Jeykll's notorious concoction. The drug transforms Pride into a homicidal white-skinned predator who goes out on murderous nocturnal rampages, mainly targeting prostitutes on the street corners of the Watts district; dangerously imposing cop Ji-Tu Cumbuka investigates. Known also as THE WATTS MONSTER and DR. BLACK, MR. HYDE, this film contains little of BLACULA's Hammer-inspired atmosphere, choosing to adopt a standard low-budget urban-action style (with dialogue to match) until the KING KONG-derived climax.

    Not as good as Blackula but not as bad as Blackenstein.

    Okay blaxplotation spin on "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" but could have been better. Can't fault the acting though and the use of real life Watts setting did add a lot to the picture.

    Worth having in your library.

    Nudity immediately, action through and through. Love the guitar in the chase scenes. Rosalind Cash and make up crew brought over the Omega Man team for Bernie Casey's Mr Hyde. LOVE IT!

    Da Black Is Da Bomb!

    Never liked a single movie titled Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde... NOT ONE. However, Dr Jekyll & Sister Hyde and Dr Black Mr Hyde are awesome examples of 1970 horror that turned the genre on it's head. I don't care about the extras, but this VCI edition is far superior to the print offered up on the Xenon DVD. This is the one to buy. PS: Blackenstein blows.
