Synopsis
"NEVER HILLARY." This amazing bit of found poetry is actually the inescapable message of a large billboard set on a country road deep in the heart of Texas. It was captured by photographer Peter Granser during his recent exploration of the American state that has, over the last eight years, become synonymous with the conservative hegemony of George W. Bush. There can be no doubt about who is not wanted here. On the heels of his acclaimed first books, Sun City (2003) and Coney Island (2006), Granser's newest offering, Signs , draws a telling picture of life today in America. For it, Granser traveled 12,000 miles through the "republic" of Texas. With keen and objective precision, he focuses in his color photographs on the plethora of relics and signs that proliferate across the landscape and provide us with insights into the strange and contradictory state of contemporary American identity., The arrow indicates the direction--it unmistakably points to the right: in the middle of a prairie-like, outdoor setting on a billboard with large letters that spell out "Signs." It is an image within an image of symbolic content, for Peter Granser has given his latest series of works, which were done in Texas in 2006-07, the title Signs. After Sun City and Coney Island, Signs tracks down points of reference that can be grasped visually as a means to reveal America's current state of mind. On his quest for suitable signs and symbols, the photographer traveled more than nineteen thousand kilometers throughout Texas, working from a stance of distant observation and skepticism as he captured images of emptiness and stagnation in George W. Bush's home country. The smudged cloth binding (printed) of "Peter Granser - Signs" is an intended creative detail. Exhibition schedule: Kunstverein Ludwigshafen, May 9-June 29, 2008 Kunstverein Ulm, March 15-May 3, 2009
