This beautifully illustrated collection of traditional Weather Lore, first published in 1893, reveals the important role all play in foretelling the weather around the world. The state of the weather is almost the first topic of conversation when people meet, which is not surprising when it is a matter of such importance to our wellbeing, health, prosperity, and even to life itself. Accurate weather predictions have always been an important human ambition and one that for some could ensure their success or failure. The result has been the framing of a rough set of rules about the weather. Some of these observations have become proverbs; others have taken the shape of rhymes; while many have been passed down by word of mouth, as mere records of facts. Covering all aspects of the weather including: Times and Seasons, Months, Days of the week, Winter birds and times of their arrival, Sun, Moon and Stars, Wind, Clouds, Mists, Haze, Dew, Fog, Sky, Air, Sound, Sea, Tide, Heat, Rain, Rainbow, Frost, Hail, Snow, Ice, Thunder and Lightning. Measuring instruments include: Barometer, Thermometer, Hygrometer, Telescope, Spectroscope. Animals include: Quadrupeds, Birds, Fish, Molluscs, Reptiles, Insects, Plants etc. This new edition has been completely redesigned and is fully illustrated with reproductions of woodcuts, photographs and drawings throughout. AUTHOR: Richard Inwards was born in 1840, and lived a fascinating life travelling the world in his capacity as a manager of international mining projects. From Norway to Bolivia, meteorological studies remained his main interest, and after settling in England he became joint editor of the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society. He became president of the society in 1894, following Weather Lore's publication the previous year.
