The first standalone novel in Stephen King's Bill Hodges trilogy (Mr Mercedes, Finders Keepers, End of Watch) - and the basis of Mr Mercedes, an AT&T Audience Original Series starring Brendon Gleeson. Described as 'the best thriller of the year' Sunday Express, the No. 1 bestseller introduces retired cop Bill Hodges in a race against time to apprehend a killer. A cat-and-mouse suspense thriller featuring Bill Hodges, a retired cop who is tormented by 'the Mercedes massacre', a case he never solved. Brady Hartsfield, perpetrator of that notorious crime, has sent Hodges a taunting letter. Now he's preparing to kill again. Each starts to close in on the other in a mega-stakes race against time.

If Stephen King did a thriller...

I have been reading King since the 90s when as a teen a friend gave me The Dark Half to read. I have been an avid fan ever since. This does not disappoint. it's the first in a series of 3 books about a retired detective. The Outsider could be considered a 4th as it features one of the key characters in Mr Mercedes but it can be read out of sequence which is what I did having bought The Outsider first. If you like King, you will enjoy these books.

  • Most critical review

    Mr Mercedes

I always tend to ignore the endorsements made by critics which adorn the front and back cover of the book I am deciding to buy. It is all subjective and the critic probably hasnt read the book anyway but hired a junior researcher to cover the salient points. I love Steven Kings books but did not love this one ,It was adequate and told a good story but wasnt gritty enough to fulfil its promise. The detective was quite passive and actually didnt do a great deal in the quest of catching the perpertrator. By coincidence I read another book a few weeks later which ironically was endorsed by Steven King, the villain of Mr Merecedes had a frightenly similar profile as one of the many the villains in this particular book.

  • Excellent

I could not put this book down. It was gripping from the first page. If you're buying it as a holiday read then make sure you get the whole trilogy!
