USB A connector wouldn't plug into any socket. Upon inspection, it was clear that one side of the USB A connector had been slightly squashed in transit or elsewhere. I gently opened it up with a thin piece of wood, and it now does connect, albeit tightly. Perhaps it needed more packaging? Having said all of which, the USB C socket is fine, and now that I can plug the USB A into sockets, the device works well for charging and data transfer.
