Additional Information
Based on real events, epic war movie 9TH COMPANY follows a group of Soviet soldiers from boot camp to fighting in Afghanistan and their battle against 400 Afghan rebels on the Djardan æ3234Æ Heights in January 1989. The 39 Soviet soldiersÆ actions made them heroes in their home country. Featuring impressively realistic battle scenes, astounding cinematography, over 1,500 extras and enough military hardware to take a small country, the film is set on a grand scale. It also sheds new light on the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, a conflict that had only previously seen through Western eyes in films such as RAMBO 3 and THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS.

  • 9th Company

I decided to buy this DVD after one or two film critics raved about it - not always the safest recommendation, particularly when you're talking about nearly 2 hours of subtitles, but I took the plunge - and it was worth it! Very similar to Full Metal Jacket (but true), the film tells the story of a draft of recruits as they go through boot camp, learn to bond and to fight - and then get plunged straight into front-line Afghanistan. The battles are brilliantly staged, but the characters are also beuatifully brought out by a really talented bunch of young Russian actors - which makes it all the more shocking when one or two of them are taken out as casually as you'd swat a fly. Don't buy this for an in-depth analysis of what the Russians were doing there - but it to see what happens to a ...

  • Vietnam for the USSR

9th Company is in my opinion one of the very best war films ever made. In terms or realism, excitment and the capture of real life horror it rises above the usual Hollywood standard. This is the most sucessful film in Russian history and rightly deserves to be so. It the story of the Afghan war through the eyes of the Russian and as such is unmissable. Buy this film, read the subtitles or learn the Russian.

  • (th Company DVD

Russian film with english subtitles about Russian soldiers training and then fighting in Afganistan in the 80s. Quite a hollywood feel to it despite being Russian made. You end up feeling sympathy for the Russians which is odd as for years they were our Cold War opponents. Plenty of blood and guts and action scenes go on and on. YOu get used to the subtitles so dont be put off its a good film.

  • 9TH COMPANY

A good film. Basically its 'Full Metal Jacket' but instead of the Yanks in Vietnam its the Russians in Afghanistan. Based on a true battle of that particular conflict. Enjoyable if you like war films and have no problem with subtitles. I read a review in a magazine and I like a bit of World Cinama every now and again as break from the usual Hollywood blockbusters.
