    The Two Li’l Abner Movies

    There have been two film adaptations of Al Capp’s Li’l Abner comic strip. The first filmed in 1940 stars Jeff York (aka Granville Owen) as Abner, Martha O’Driscoll as Daisy Mae, and features Buster Keaton as Lonesome Polecat. This is a B&W production. It’s an enjoyable movie, and of course features the Sadie Hawkins Day race to catch a man! But this may not be the version most shoppers are looking for. The 1959 version is the film adaption of the Broadway Musical, and stars Peter Palmer as Abner, Leslie Parrish as Daisy Mae, Stubby Kaye as Marryin’ Sam, and Julie Newmar as (OMG) Stupefyin’ Jones. This is the wide screen, color production. It is out of print, but can be found from time to time. Copies of his DVD clearly state Based on the Broadway Musical on the cover.
