The surgery of infancy and childhood, which originally encompassed the care of the whole child, has rightly developed such subspecialities as paediatric neurosurgery, otolaryngology, cardiothoracic surgery, urology, orthopaedics and plastic surgery. Because of these developments, the work of the general paediatric surgeon is now largely confined to the care of abdominal surgical disorders. An entirely different spectrum of illnesses present themselves in the abdominal surgical diseases, both acquired and congenital, that occur in children as opposed to those which occur in adults. The special psychological and nutritional requirements of growing children, as well as the different responses to trauma during childhood, are recognised by surgeons, neonatologists and paediatric intensivists who must care for children on a daily basis. This work begins with the basic problems of paediatric abdominal surgical procedures and then details the specific care of individual conditions. The text is organised into diseases of the newborn, older infants and children, and then into the physiologically specialized areas of the adrenal, pancreatic, parasitic and hepatobiliary disorders, tumours and trauma. Within these separate sections the probable diagnosis and the recommended treatment programmes are identified and discussed.
