Caught up in the mania of "STAR WARS", network TV may have allowed a 'bona-fide sci-fi classic' to get lost among the bigger 'space epic' series of the time. Fortunately, the DVD format has preserved the all-too brief run of "QUARK", a rather clever comedy send-up of the sci-fi genre, created by "GET SMART!" alumn Buck Henry. ADAM QUARK (RICHARD BENJAMIN) is a brave, handsome and highly-competent Starship Captain; relugated to the command of what appears to be an intergalactic 'garbage scow', prowling in search of 'space baggies' filled with the garbage of passing starships. Though admittedly not much of a life, he and his rather 'unique' crew are ocassionally caught up in missions involving threats to the Milky Way, which are handled with great success and aplumb, though it would seem not nearly enough to impress his immediate superiors that he is deserving of a higher, more fitting command. Operating from PERMA ONE, a space station in the center of the MIlky Way that serves as headquarters for the Inter-Galactic Confederation, Quark takes orders from Station Superintendent OTTO PALINDROME (CONRAD JANIS), whose superior in turn is a humanoid with a huge cranium known as "the HEAD", the ruler of the UNIVERSE. Henry's handling of the series gives Adam the appearance of an unappreciated nebbish of a character who has difficuly even standing up to ERGO, his supposely loyal pet who is a Plasma based life form who tries to consume him. As for his crew, Adam's beautiful second-in-command, "BETTY", or in this case, "BETTYS" (CYD & TRISH BARNSTABLE), are identical twin, one being a CLONE created in a lab accident. While both Bettys are madly in love with Adam, it is a rather inconvenient personal relationship as well as confusing; since neither one will admit to being the clone !!!! His engineer, GENE/JEAN,(TIM THOMERSON) is a humannoid with a full set of male and female chromosomes, being able to exibit male or female behavior at any time; usually his female side emerges during the most inappropriate situations. ANDI THE ANDROID, a cowardly robot whose inventor, DR I.B. MUDD (DOUGLAS FOWLEY) bailed out after making the pilot episode, tends to betray Quark at every turn when confronted with the enemy. And then there is the 'painfuuly logical' science-officer FICUS (RICHARD FELTON), a humanoid plant creature with whom Adam can never win a logical arguement with, and whose lack of personality would make MR SPOCK look warm and fuzzy in comparrison. In spite of these limitations, ADAM QUARK does well enough to defeat enemies like the GORGAN EMPIRE and the CLAY PEOPLE of ROBUMBUS, yet falter against the one adversary that eventually does him in; that being FRED SILVERMAN, the 'evil' head of programming for NBC !!! Fortunately, true sci-fi fans will have this remarkable DVD collection that includes all nine original episodese--including the pilot and the one-hour season premiere--to cherish; and wonder with the rest of us if somehow a great classic series could have been possible here. Hopefully, the legacy preserved here will be enough !!!Read full review
Old throw back comedy, with the funky Star Trek sound effects from the sixties. Entertaining!
