Riding the wild horse of Chinese literature, The late 16th-century novel Jin Ping Mei has been described as a landmark in the development of the narrative art form, there being no earlier work of prose fiction of equal sophistication in world literature. However, it is also seen as something of a wild horse, shaking off and trampling the morals and principles of its day, displaying frankly and without shame the secrets of human nature and a life of sensual delight. Although it was branded as a forbidden book soon after its appearance, it lived on underground and is still only available in Chinese bookshops in censured editions. This roman fleuve has caught the attention of scholars working in many different fields, place and periods. Unfortunately, the interdisciplinary and transnational exchange has been limited, in part because of distance and language barriers. The present volume aims to bridge this gap, bringing together the best quality research on Jin Ping Mei by both established and emerging scholars. Not only will it showcase this research but also it will serve as a reader, helping future generations to better understand and appreciate this important work. Book jacket.

Item was delivered as advertised however it was not delivered in a box which allowed it to receive some minor damage. Book was in 2 very durable form fitted vinyl/plastic bags which would have been great had then been placed in a box to protect it. Seller was very easy to discuss issue with and the damage is slight.
